What is Grafana?

Grafana is open source visualization and analytics software. It allows you to query, visualize, alert on, and explore your metrics no matter where they are stored. In plain English, it provides you with tools to turn your time-series database (TSDB) data into beautiful graphs and visualizations [1]. For more extra information you can visit documentation site right here

What was our strategy?

After finishing most parts of our web application, we thought to equip our visualization section with slightly superior graphics. This thought led us to integrate with different applications. After some research, we created beautiful graphics with Grafana.

Thus, in this article, we will be doing basic operations on Grafana. So, firstly we created one of basic graph. Then we moved to hard ones.

Creating Grafana Environment

After downloading Grafana from this URL, you can access your local machines to Grafana UI. The default port is 3000 and the complete URL must be localhost:3000. I changed my port number to 3025 because I used this port for other applications. Also, you can change your port number at "{downloadedPath} /config/default.ini" file.

Now, we must execute Grafana server executable file. This provides to run as local service. Please execute "grafana-server.exe" at "{downloadedPath}/bin/" location. When you click this file, a command prompt appear and creating Grafana database in your local file system(at the "/data" path). You can see some SQL DML Results on command prompt.

grafana-server.exe executed

If you see the local Grafana user interface, this means you have successfully created it.

Grafana First Page (localhost:3025)

After building local Grafana setup, firstly logging with default user to continue. Grafana default user very easy to know as the other application default users. In Grafana, the default user is "admin" and it's password "admin".

The login page as below
Login Page

Input default user informations to related areas and click Log In button to next page. We will set a new password at next page which is contain two password input area.

After entering your new passwords, you need to be directed to the home page. Your browser is going to show a page to you as following:

Logged In User Home Page

If you have been able to follow these steps, we can now continue to add new data sources to Grafana! Please keep following.

Next step is Adding a Data Source
